Platypus Ensemble is an innovative and dynamic ensemble for contemporary music based in Vienna with more than 10 years experience at the austrian and international stage. Its roots lie in the older association „Platypus – Verein für Neue Musik“, which started originally as an initiative by young composers. The Platypus Ensemble, founded with graduated musicians of the University for Music and performing Arts Vienna, represents a natural development of ideas and idealism of the “Verein”.
Since February 2019 a new team took over the management and artistic direction of the Platypus Ensemble. The current work includes research and conception of new concert formats, constant search and work with young and interesting composers, cooperation with artists and composers like Peter Ablinger, Bernhard Lang, Georg Nussbaumer and others.
Intensive work for and with children and young people is essential for Platypus Ensemble, for example by visiting schools, making projects with young musicians, etc.
Platypus Ensemble cooperates with a large number of organizers and festivals like Wien Modern, Reaktor Vienna, Arnold Schönberg Center Vienna, the Wiener Konzerthaus, Klangspuren Schwaz Festival, the London Ear Festival, the Forum Neue Musik Wallis, the Bienal Música Hoje in Curitiba/Brazil, the IGNM/ISCM, the ÖGZM (Austrian Society for Contemporary Music), sirene operntheater, the Austrian Composer’s Federation (Österreichischer Komponistenbund) and the Austrian Label col legno.
The Ensemble co-produces and plays concerts in Austria and in many countries such as Argentina, Bosnia, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Switzerland, Turkey or Ukraine.
